Spring Service Project – Loving Hugs.

5 Mar

Our service project for Spring 2012 is providing donations to Loving Hugs, a Colorado-based non-profit.  Loving Hugs collects gently used (and new) stuffed animals to send to children in war-torn and other devastated regions around the world.

This is a particularly easy service project for us to include our children.  Even toddlers can pick out one stuffed animal to donate, and older kids may want to collect donations from their friends.  You can participate by simply emptying out your own basement or you can place a collection box at a location of your choice – school, church, gym, your front porch – it’s up to you!  Donations will be collected on May 4 at our last meeting of the semester.

The official Loving Hugs donation guidelines are on their website, but here is a brief overview:
1. Between 10 and 24 inches tall.  No Beanie Babies or other small lovies.
2. No cartoon or TV/movie characters other than the classics (Mickey Mouse, Winny the Pooh, Snoopy).
3. Only soft/cuddly animals – no hard or plastic animals.
4. “Cute” animals please – no scary animals like sharks, crustaceans, bugs, or reptiles.
5. No holiday themed animals unless you can remove their holiday clothing.

Martina is coordinating the service project and will have more information for us as the semester progresses.  We will likely have a “snipping and sorting” day at Montview to process the donations before dropping them off at the Loving Hugs headquarters in Littleton.  We also hope to have a bake sale in May or June to raise money to help with shipping costs.  Stay tuned for details.
