Spring 2013 Service Project – Safe Passage.

10 Feb

Each semester, MomTime selects a nonprofit organization to benefit from the amazing energy and caring embodied by this phenomenal group of women (you!). Some of us spread the word and place boxes at our churches, community groups, schools, and book clubs…please do what you can and know that no matter how small your effort, together we can have a great impact.

This spring, we are focusing our efforts on collecting: NEW SOCKS (size 2T and up) and LICE SHAMPOO (RID and like brands) to send to Guatemala’s SAFE PASSAGE, an amazing organization (4-star charity rating by Charity Navigator, which ain’t easy to get!). Safe Passage operates a school that provides education and social services to Guatemala’s poorest children – those who would otherwise be sifting and salvaging garbage all day in Guatemala City’s enormous garbage dump. Approximately 550 children get education and support services and their parents have the opportunity now to learn to read as well, as a result of Safe Passage’s efforts.

In June, a group of teachers from Colorado will travel to Guatemala to volunteer at Safe Passage, and we would like to send them packing…with socks and lice shampoo, both of which are especially needed in the rainy summer months. Can we collect 550 pairs? 1100? Let’s try!

For more information about SP (including photos of high school graduates and videos of their programs), please go to: http://www.safepassage.org/

If you wish to donate directly to Safe Passage, please click on the “donate now” tab to the right of the page. They will send you an email receipt for tax purposes.   Be sure to note MomTime in the comments section when you donate so they can keep track of how much we raise as a group.

Be sure to come to MomTime on March 15 to hear from one of the teachers going to volunteer…and keep those new socks coming!  If you have any questions about the project, please contact our Service Project Coordinators: Martina, Kim, and Haley.
